RapDev's Winning Culture and Why I Stay

How RapDev attracts and keeps great talent

Why RapDev Stood Out From Day One

I have worked for many organizations over the course of my life, and I have had great managers and ineffective managers. I always hear a similar sentiment from almost every coworker I talk to since joining RapDev. “I have never worked for a place with a culture like this. RapDev is amazing!”

When I first started at RapDev over 3.5 years ago. I was impressed by the interview process. They reviewed and asked me some questions about my resume and some of my professional certifications. Then they quickly shifted focus to “That is all fine, but can you program? Show us what you can do, and tell us about previous projects you have completed in ServiceNow”. They jumped into a hands-on paired programming session and asked me questions about different areas of the ServiceNow platform. At first, I thought, “Man, that was pretty intense,” but I saw the value in it. They were testing to see if I could communicate well, follow technical directions, and were trying to see a glimpse of how I presented myself under a bit of pressure, as a ServiceNow Engineer.

I met with Tameem (the founder of the company) for my culture interview, who introduced himself as an Engineer. I was impressed because he presented himself as a humble and kind leader who cared about his people and not about titles or ego

Building Connections Beyond Remote Work

I met my coworkers on my first trip to Boston for Summer Week in 2022, two weeks after getting hired. Twice a year, all of the remote employees travel to Boston, MA, for 1 week to work in the RapDev office with our coworkers face-to-face. We call it Summer and Winter Week. It is a great way to connect in person and build meaningful relationships and friendships with other employees that we don’t interact with on a daily basis. Since that first Summer Week, I have had time to observe and see the amazing growth and make great new friends. Here are just some of the things that set RapDev apart from other companies.

What Sets RapDev Apart

  1. All Technical Managers are Engineers First
Managing the team is meant to be a small part of their job. Each manager I have worked with has had a “kind mentor” attitude and is always willing to help out and jump into a meeting with you. Even pulling in other team members to figure out issues that you may be having. Since they are engineers first, they at least have a minimum level of technical skill you can rely on. They lead projects even while managing a team. This keeps their skills sharp, and 99% of the time, they are aware of the work you are doing and how to help when needed.
  2. Professionalism Is Expected and Reciprocated
People who strive to be professionals in any industry realistically don’t need to be “managed”. No one should be getting “written up” for anything. Professionals are on time and prepared for their meetings and/or projects, if not, they communicate with their team in advance to have the meeting rescheduled. Or they ask a fellow engineer on the project to cover for them with enough time to prepare. Professionals ask for help when needed. No one should be chasing you down asking why you missed the meeting or deadline. This is one of the things that sets RapDev apart, we strive to always maintain great communication with our teams and our clients.
  3. RapDev Rewards Effort
Being a salaried employee, sometimes you can feel like you are stuck in a rut, overworked, underpaid, or just under appreciated. But at RapDev, good work is always called out and recognized. Whether it is within your project team or other internal Slack channels, the recognition and appreciation are there. Voluntary incentives are offered in several areas, so you always have a clear goal to strive for and are rewarded for putting in the extra effort. Some managers in other organizations improperly try to motivate by fear or ultimatums; RapDev motivates by uplifting team effort and rewarding great work with monetary incentives. We have a “work hard, play hard” focus, and employees are encouraged to take PTO to avoid burnout.
  4. Check Your Ego At The Door
RapDev is looking for great people who have a “kind mentor” attitude. We strive to hire kind and humble people who love to teach others and don’t hoard information, because they think it somehow gives them job security. I have seen the opposite of this time and time again at RapDev. “Upper management” cares about their coworkers, and I feel comfortable talking to them anytime. Titles don’t matter here, and they strive to keep a truly flat organization. Management sits in desks next to other engineers; this speaks volumes!
  5. We Love Our Customers
I have heard it said many times at RapDev, “Do what is right for the customer and the rest will follow!” If we are providing the best quality engineering solutions for our customers, they will come back and refer others. We pride ourselves on providing solutions to complex problems and teaching the client’s teams how to support the products after the engagement is over.

The Secret Sauce

In conclusion, these are just a few of the many things I have come to realize about the “secret sauce” that makes RapDev hum with amazing engineering, and an award winning culture that keeps happy employees and happy customers. If this sounds like a place you'd want to be, check out our career page.
